Every year we set goals for ourselves. Now these goals may be goals that we actually want to work towards or they may be goals that we have seen other people setting and therefore we think we should be achieving those goals too.
I am here to tell you today that when it comes to goal setting to only set goals that align with you. If you set goals that don't align with your overarching vision for your life, that don't align with your personality and don't make you feel excited then it's not the right goal for you.
So today's post is focused on how you can set yourself goals that align with you and a couple of pointers to keep you on track to completing your goal.
Step 1 - Know Your Values
By having a clear understanding of your values you will have a better understanding of the things that you get excited to do and the things that don't really make you feel motivated. Knowing your values also helps when it comes down to surrounding yourself with people who will encourage you and guide you. If you know that you're not motivated by negativity then you know not to hang out with people who bring that to the table.
Step 2 - Know Your Goals
Personally, this for me is the fun part of the process! You can write down your most wildest of dreams! The sky is the limit! Go ahead and write down everything you want to achieve in life, no matter how crazy!
Step 3 - Compare Your Goals With Your Values
Now take your values and your goals and compare them against each other. You will have goals that align more with your values and the life that you're leading at the moment than others. Pair them up and highlight the ones that align most with you at the minute. These will then be the goals that you work on and achieve. The goals that don't align right now, still keep them as they may align with your values at a later date.
Step 4 - Create an Action Plan
As I say in every goal post, you need an action plan and an outline of how you will achieve your goals. Without a plan you won't have a clear direction of how you will achieve your goal therefore leading to you not completing your goal.
So start from the end result and work backwards in small, manageable steps so you can tick off your progress along the way.
Step 5 - Remind Yourself
Everyday you want to be looking back to your goals and reminding yourself of your plan. The success of doing this is that you will be reminding yourself of why you are achieving for this goal in the first place and will then make you feel motivated to achieve it.
Step 6 - It's Ok to Adapt
Overtime our values and what is important to us will change so if you have a goal that you've set yourself but it no longer aligns with your values, it is ok to not achieve it and restart the process.
